FINNISH PHONE FIRM Nokia has boasted that it is responsible for the success of the Windows Phone operating system so far, downplaying the contributions of HTC and Samsung.
Speaking at the launch of its Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 handsets in London today, Conor Pierce, VP of Nokia UK and Ireland said that Nokia has been responsible for getting Windows Phone noticed, and for spurring the mobile operating system's success so far.
He said, "Back in November we launched a new brand, Lumia and since then we've gotten phenomenal awareness of that brand. Nokia Lumia is synonymous with Windows Phone.
"We resurrected the Windows Phone. We have been the driving force of Windows Phone. We have led the Windows Phone platform in the UK up to this point.
"Thanks to our momentum we've seen great interest from our partners and our competition and I welcome them - welcome to the party."
That's not to say that Windows Phone has been a massive success up until now, as the latest statistics from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech show. Microsoft's mobile operating system holds just a 2.3 percent share of the mobile market here in Blighty, which is very little in comparison with Android and IOS, which hold around 55 percent and 20 percent market shares, respectively.
Still, Pierce nodded to the slow traction that Windows Phone is gaining, saying that Nokia is aware of the challenges it faces ahead.
"We know where we stand, we know we have a firm challenge. However, inch by inch we will get there. We are confident of that."
Only time will tell. µ
